My 30 year old daughter has used Air for trips to other cities and swears by it.
I think Craigslist is a little dodgy for finding a place to stay.
BTW, I think that many people in talking about LA mention what I call "The Usual Suspects." Until you get here, I don't think you can get an idea of where you want to stay.
Personally, I like Atwater near where I live in Los Feliz. I now work in an office which is converted light industrial space in what is now called "The Arts District" -- it is somewhat "funky" and there are a lot of loft spaces there.
Our office is near the Southern California Institute of Architecture [sciarc.edu] where I often grab lunch. I note that they often have "roommate wanted" ads up. Moral -- check with the local colleges.

Every time my friend goes to USA she uses Craig list, and it served her very well...
