I am not too sure if anyone can help me out here. I have been trying to find the
answer to this question and I seem to get different answers on different days.

I will be moving out of my house on March 9th, but I will be flying into the States
on my Fiancee Visa on March 22nd . Can I move my things to the States before I am
actually there?

If anyone has done this.. could you please let me know by email or through this site.
I only have about 3 weeks left here and I am becoming a little concerned.

Our experience on Jim's Can/Am move was that the moving company could NOT take his household belongings across the border until his visa was activated.

Now I know that others here on the NG from the UK and elsewhere shipped their items consolidated before they came over and without a problem.

So there you go .... no true answer from me ;-(

I had the same experiance. moving from Vancouver to the states. I had to fax them a
copy of the visa after I crossed the border. They did pick-up and hold my stuff

My understanding is that the k1 visa holder has to have entered the states already,
for their household goods to be admitted. This is why I (and several others) had to
go through this silliness of crossing the border, then faxing back the 1-94 to the
moving company so that they could then proceed. You probably will have to have the
moving company hold your goods until you cross.

It isn't really silliness.

Your goods are coming into the country duty free. They can only be duty free if they are accompanying a visaholder. If the goods come before you, there is no guarantee that you will follow. Nothing to stop someone from sending household goods to the US for resale, taking the money and leaving the US without its rightful share of taxes on those items sold if they should have been rightfully taxed upon entry.

We rented a U-Haul and drove from Toronto to NY. We had no trouble at the
border. They opened up the truck, took a quick look, asked what was in there and
let us through.

More people rent U-hauls than use private shippers. It is the easier and sometimes cheapest way to go if you don't have a lot of large furniture going across.

Just make up a list of what is in each box (the same as you will do for a private mover). Number the box and use that number to identify the contents on your list. Make a copy for yourself and one for customs. Oft times they just wave you trhough but once in a while they will take the list.

I used a mover (Atlas Van Lines) to move my personal effects. They took a copy of my
K-1 Visa before I left Canada and I had to provide them with my POE date. In
addition, there is a form you must sign for goods NOT accompanying you into the US,
but which are NOT allowed to cross UNTIL you have!

Using a U-haul was significantly cheaper ($1700 CDN cheaper) than a mover, but it
turns out that if I towed anything greater than the towing capacity as outlined in my
vehicle warranty, my warrantly would be voided. If your vehicle is relatively new
