Re: More on US Health Insurance
The offset to paying for health insurance and medical services is that you might save on taxes (income and VAT, though it is less likely you will save on property tax), and there are several ways to pay bona fide medical expenses from your pre-tax income. It isn't often mentioned here on BE, but unlike in the UK, there are still a good number of personal expenses that can be deducted from your gross income to reach your taxable income.
I save significantly more in taxes than I pay out in health insurance and medical expenses.

Try having a chronic illness such as diabetes or COPD and you would probably find the dollars spent on meds and specialist consults etc would be an immense drain on your finances.

With respect Pulaski that is probably because *touch wood* you are of good health and have no real need for healthcare apart from routine physicals etc

I do agree that the US is a bad place to have chronic medical issues.

Please be very careful and get whatever you need in order. I spent 3 weeks in hospital in February with double pneumonia and sepsis. The bill was $265K, luckily I have insurance thru husband's work so all I paid was the copay for the er which was $200.
