Month 'designating'? is it just a US thing?
I have to say, I find this month designating thing quite confusing, who comes up with the 'designation' anyway? I just read in the local paper that March has been designated (in Illinois) "Irish immigrant" month, "starbucks coffee" month and something else that is so ridiculous it escapes me!
I understand the ones like "Abraham Lincoln" month or "Cancer survivors" month, but really, there are some pretty silly designations, I heard one last week, it's going to be "no children left indoors" month in June? Who takes any notice of them and is it a State wide thing? or just here? Did they ever do this in the UK? I don't ever remember hearing of it.

I think our American brethren just love to stick labels on things. It's always a laugh on Jeopardy when they come up with stuff like "It's the state rock of Wyoming" or "It's the state candy of Colorado".

the most you every see in the UK is a 'day' or a 'week' not a whole month.

I'm familiar with February = African American history month. That's about it.

Makes me think of Professor Tom Lehrer's classic "National Brotherhood Week" from about 1965 or so.

For those who don't catch the clues -- Cassius Clay is the "slave name" of Muhammad Ali, and "Mrs. Wallace" refers to her husband George Wallace, who was the segregationist governor of Alabama [who has been rehabilitated in part at time went on].

Just had a e-mail from the Red Cross to say The President declared March Red Cross month. Something which has been done each March since 1943.
What it achieves I haven't a clue.

It's national nutrition month as designated by the American Dietetic Association. They like it so much they even registered the name and have usage guidelines about how you can use it! That's going a little too far.
