Mississippi???

I'm looking into another job and before I decide if really want to go for it I need some help on web-sites for accomodation in Mississippi. I've done some searches but not come up with much.....

I'm pretty flexible with location, although the Gulf Coast would be nice. :D

Anyone had any experience of this area???

Ask Duncs - he is/was there.

Duncs Jun 19th 2004 4:10 am

NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!

I live near Jackson(for 2 more weeks) and I f-u-c-king hate it here.

I would not recommend Mississippi to anyone. Of course if you think your whole life and success is owed to Jesus who told you to keep your money for yourself not giver any in taxes to undeserving lazy poor people with the obvious exception of what you pay in tithe to your Lincoln driving halfwit of a minister at the local coven and you just plain dont like or trust black folks you might like it here. Otherwise run now while you can!

Me, either. My daughter has lived in NYC, Naples, Florida, Las Vegas and now, Biloxi, MS. She hates it. The people are still plotting a new Civil War and the only form of entertainment is either the casinos in LA or shopping in SuperWalmart. Prejudice down there is in solid caps. Hot, humid. buggy and on and on.

Like Duncs said, run while you can.

RLMFAO!!!

:D :D :D

Watch Lewis Black on HBO for an insight into Mississippi :D

If you like wearing bedsheets with KKK sewn into them and enjoy burning crosses (I do, but purely for anti-religious purposes) then head on down. Of course, if you like blues music, then it's the place to be.

North Mississippi is decent for a job. Also, Hattiesburg seems middle class. Driving through, I always stop there to eat as the restaurants are the cleanest.

Having never been to Mississippi myself, I asked K what it was like, thinking that some of the views here were unfairly biased. His reply? Mississippi is like the pit of the earth! One day I will have to go and see for myself.....

Uh, I have to agree.

Although, I did live in Hattiesburg and I enjoyed it. DO NOT MOVE HERE. I live in Oxford (home of Ole Miss) and I have lived all around North Mississippi, Columbus, and Hattiesburg.

I used to defend Mississippi to people from "up north" and such because they automatically associated all of the crap things with ME, as though I am somehow responsible for 100 years of rednecks and oppression. However, I have encountered such blatant racism and Willful Ignorance here in Oxford that I refuse to stand up anymore.

My family is from Mississippi and they are all very intelligent, progressive, NORMAL people. They are, sadly, in the vast minority in this twisted state.

Re: ...

I've been to Hattiesburg several times and Gulfport too - I would honestly love to be closer to Gulfport right now as I thought it was pretty nice - other areas of MS I have driven through - ugh.

Frame of mind I am in right now - I think in general making a decision to live in the South is a big mistake tho! ;) Nah, I say that tongue in cheek but it is certainly a HUGE culture shock and I would think long and hard!

You mean tiny minority surely?

Remember Oxford is a liberal place in Mississippi terms. Down here thats defined as being the only school board area in Mississippi that does not legally allow teachers to beat children.

Its a cultural black hole down here and its an ignorant, backward place I can not suggest strongly enough that you dont move here. I have 2 more weeks on my sentence(thats how i see it now) then here comes Massachusetts, I cant wait.

By the way the average IQ in Mississippi is 85 so thats tells you a lot as well.

markwplatt Jun 21st 2004 5:14 am

85 IQ???

The reported 85 IQ average is a hoax started to show that more intelligent people voted for Gore (I know I did).
The south is indeed a difficult place top live, and its true you do have to search for "like minded folks" but they do exist. You really, really have to be able to stand the humidity though...

Shreveport, LA

Trisha Jun 21st 2004 6:10 am

oops. yes, i meant they are in the small minority. shot myself in the foot there.

Oxford is by no means liberal. Someone proudly pointed out to me a tree that still shows marks where (i cannot bring myself to say the word) hung. He showed it to me and said "yeah, they know not to come around here." as if I should be impressed.

Seriously, stay away. I did not even know such people still existed. But they do. and they live here.

I am running away as soon as I can.

I visited with my wifes grandparents on saturday they live near a town which locals know as 'no nigger' who proudly claim that the tree which had tyhe last lynching on in mississippi is located here. In between telling me how the WMD were smuggled to Syria by Saddam and that the War on terror would last until Jesus brings us world peace when he returns i think i lost my mind somewhere.

This is the worst place i have ever lived and i would never come back here and i lived for 10 years in Belfast and it was much better than this.

Hi Duncs.

Sorry, I haven't kept up with you recent postings. I read awhile ago that you weren't to happy down in Mississippi. Are you moving back to Belfast or someplace else in the US?
