Manchester Airport to New York

Re: Manchester Airport to New York
Don't rule out staying out from the center a bit, with the subway system it can feel like you are close to things. Its nice to have a kitchen for breakfast, which you might get at the same price for downtown just for a bedroom.

Re: Manchester Airport to New York
In April last year we stayed in Manhattan on two occasions for 4 and 3 nights respectively.
The first was at the New Yorker near Penn station which had great art deco architecture and fixtures, even original deco features in the room, but the room was tiny. That cost us approx. £140 per night including tax.
The second was at the Manhattan at Times Square which was a much larger room (and correspondingly more expensive at around £200 per night) but that hotel just didn't have any character really.
Recently work colleagues from London have been staying a lot at the Gotham opposit our offices on 46th Street between Madison and 5th and have been saying good things about it.

Try airbnb.com - you can get some really good deals.

You may be better to try to get an all inclusive deal from one of the UK internet travel agents. You can usually pick up a package tour from the UK for not a great deal more than the airfare alone.
We are going on a cruise next spring. My sister who lives and booked her ticket from the UK got a great deal. For not much more than we have paid for our cabin only (7nights)...she got flights from Manchester to Miami...4 nights in Miami...7 night cruise...plus she is staying on the ship for a further 7 night cruise. :sunglasses:

$124 a night in mid-January which is equivalent to £78 per night.

OP - don't overlook the fact that published rates will usually be prior to the addition of somewhat hefty taxes, as per this example.

Just did the same trip and flew into Newark, here's my hotel:
Stayed here for 3 nights @ £75 per night, great hotel, great location (expect breakfast on plastic plates & cutlery though): Hampton Inn Manhattan/Times Square South. 337 W 39th St New York, NY 10018
TIP: IF YOU'RE INTENDING TO CLOTHES SHOP VISIT THE JERSEY GARDENS MALL, CHEAP SHUTTLE BUS, 10min RIDE TO/FROM NEWARK AIRPORT EVERY 30MINS, MUCH BETTER AND CHEAPER THAN NY, LOADS OF MAKES OUTLET STORES (HOLLISTER T-SHIRTS £9, ARMANI SHIRTS £12 etc).
The transfer from Newark to NY is a painless 20-30min train journey, the hotel above is a short walk from Penn station in NY.

Personally I think that Jersey Gardens Mall is not as good as it used to be. For serious outlet shopping, Woodbury Commons in Upstate NY is the big attraction and buses go directly from the Port Authority bus station, one block from Times Square. It attracts coachloads of tourists from SE Asia and China...However, it would take a day out of a trip to NYC.

I went to Jersey Gardens a couple of times when it first opened around 12 years ago. Didn't care for it then and haven't been back since. As you say Woodbury Commons is much better...although it is all outside and the weather up there can be brutal in wintertime.
I always smile to myself when I get on the plane from Newark to Manchester...almost all the girls are wearing the same style of Uggs. I just know they have been on a day trip from NYC to Woodbury Commons.

NEW YORK CITY FIFTH AVENUE
13 WEST 45TH STREET NEW YORK CITY , NEW YORK 10036 United States
Hotel Front Desk: 212-302-9088 Hotel Fax: 212-302-3088
I can absolutely recommend this hotel but its a bit over your budget at about £130 per night but its in a great location within walking distance to everything. We booked with BA when we went and they were very competitive, couldn't get it any cheaper with anybody else.

Re: Manchester Airport to New York
Always a bit of a cap shoot recommending individual properties as the majority of hotels practice revenue management through demand-based pricing. This means that the same room will sell for $100 some nights and $500 on others (and everywhere in-between) depending on current bookings and forecast occupancy.
That said, mid January I reckon you should be ok on around $150 per night to avoid a bed-bug infested fleapit.
In addition to scoping out the major chains I think someone already mentioned Travelzoo - there are some genuine bargains that appear on there that are negotiated specifically for that site so I'd recommend having a butchers. Other than that, make sure to Tripadvisor the property before committing to a booking, and remember that advance purchase rates aside most bookings can be canceled up to 6pm day of arrival (check individual terms) so you can get the best option you can see now "in the bag" and then continue looking in case prices drop - which they can do.
