Default Long Island or Manhattan

First post so forgive any faux pas.

Husband is going to be based out of Melville, may travel to Morristown and fly from LaGuardia and JFK, so we need a home in NY. We currently live in a 'sleepyish' seaside town in the UK hence are looking at Long Island but have also been advised that Manhattan is a sensible option.

Added complication 3x children (at university) studying in UK who will be visiting us.

Thank you.

Hi R3GDE and welcome to BE

Check out the US forums on advice on NY and Manhattan - you can find them from the forum index. Good luck with the move

It's ridiculously expensive to live on Long Island, and insanely so in Manhattan. If your income isn't in the $150k+ range you're likely to be in for a rude awakening living on Long Island. On that sort of money you'd be living in Manhattan in an apartment no bigger than a shoe box.

Hello R3GDE

Just wanted to say hello- we live in Northport, a sleepy little seaside town on Long Island NoPo is about 20 minutes drive from Melville, an hour by train to NYC. My husband travels to Parsippany NJ about once a month, and can do it in 90 minutes with a clear run (very early start!).

As mentioned-it is ridiculously expensive on LI...but it IS a very nice area. Proximity to beaches etc. makes it a little more bearable. There are lots of Brits around here and Huntington (next town West) if that is important to you.

Would be happy to give you any more info if you decide to move in this direction.

Good Luck !

Moving to Manhattan after life in a UK seaside town would be serious culture shock -- unless you are looking for a completely different, big city lifestyle. Good luck.

Agreed, and could be disorienting time warp, as well
