Lease break - NYC
hey just wanted to get some general advice for a lease break in New York City. Will be leaving around 4 months early due to family issues in the UK. It is a rental building. Any general advice on this?
I realise situation may be having to pay the rest of the rent for the building but have seen adverts on other apartments in the building being listed as short term lease break etc

is there an early termination addendum in the lease?

Check your leases wording, but generally its 2 months rent, I had to break mine moving from LA to Atlanta, I had to pay a month, plus an early release month, if you time it to as to close to your normal rent date as possible you'll be good, but it will be in your enormously long lease paperwork somewhere.

It’s worth talking to your super or letting agent about the situation. If there’s a waiting list for the building you may get off without penalty. I left my NYC apartment a couple of years early with no repercussions because they could let it immediately at a higher rent. Doesn’t hurt to ask!

Yes my building has a lettings office on looking at the lease document doesnt specify anything just says must get permission before 'abandonment' I want to leave during the summer when demand tends to be higher!
