I love how "Rich Old People" live beside "Douche Bags On Cocaine". And "Russians" live beside "Gays" (what would Putin think?).

Hmm, my area of residence is "Hipsters" and "Gay Guys With Beards."

LA is just like Marmite. A dense, smoky, overrated by-product of more profitable industry, that is an acquired taste if you're not used to it, pretends to be healthy, is better the more thinly you spread it, and is only really enjoyable if you have bread.

Dana Point, Laguna Beach, Newport?

Dana Point is heaven for me, we're moving back there in two years.

I was one of the ones that mentioned traffic and the horrible nature of LA to SurreyMum.....yes you'd be ok in some of the richer areas and by the beach but in general I wouldn't live there if you paid me millions. I did suggest West a bit on the 101 corridor, eg. Thousand Oaks.

Just look at the transition when you drive from LA to OC..you leave potholes, run down industrial and grafitti and enter better roads, landscaping, new office buildings....

Yep, I can't imagine living in those areas. I'd actually prefer up in Oxnard or Ventura if I wanted to be by the beach -- but otherwise, no character there.

I am not one of those "There is no life east of Sepulveda" types. I happen to like Los Feliz in L.A. City, I spend a fair amount of my time in the "Arts District" just east of Little Tokyo. Shopping in Glendale and Highland Park. My docs are in Pasadena. Above Glendale is LaCresenta/Montrose.

Public transit is a lot better than it used to be. I will admit that I like having the Senior Tap Card.

Yes, traffic is a bitch -- that is why I avoid the West Side, and Orange County for that matter.

I'm not saying that L.A. is paradise, but it get an awfully bad rap IMHO.

Wow thanks for all the replies!

Just to answer the location question - if the job works out hubby would be based in the Universal City area. So far we have "browsed" the following areas: Studio City, Toluca Lake, Sherman Oaks (south of the 101), Hollywood Hills areas to stay close ish to reduce his commute.

However, we would hope to put our daughters into private school (what they are used to and I want to stick to smaller class sizes and uniforms) but I know how hard they are to get into and am still staggered at the cost....!!! On the list to look into further are schools as far away as Brentwood and Century City. So who knows where we would end up if they were at schools in those areas!

So I guess I am looking at the great LA Metropolitan area.

From the point of view of someone currently living in London:

Traffic? Yes, the traffic was pretty bad, but here in South London the traffic is awful too. I drive to Brixton once a week: 4.5 miles, 45 minutes. Don't speak to me of the M25, because I spent half the Christmas holidays on it. At least in LA I had an automatic and didn't have to shift from 1st to 2nd gear eleventy million times a journey.

Rent? Maybe LA is expensive in comparison to much of the US, but rent is completely out of control here in London. If you're coming from anything vaguely similar, LA is not going to pain you. Seriously: we live in Zone fricking Three and now pay £1800/month ($3000!)... for a 2-bedroom flat. It does not have a pool. Parking? Bahaha.

Kardashians? In LA, I saw that type from a distance, but we must have been moving in the wrong circles because I never really met any. Husband was a post-doc so our demographic was more Big Bang Theory than Beverly Hills 90210. The non-uni people we knew did tend towards yoga, vegan muffins and positive mantras, but in, like, a pleasantly unassuming way, and they were always fun to have a drink with (even if they did insist on a 20-mile hike the next day).

I really didn't get the impression anyone was more or less superficial than in London, but I expect that does vary depending on your area/industry/income.

What I miss about LA: being near the ocean, the mountains; lots going on; eclectic neighbourhoods and food; great museums and indoor/outdoor spaces; test screenings; inadvertently developing an active lifestyle due to almost-always lovely weather.

There's also plenty I don't miss, but I think others have that covered!

But shouldn't property be cheaper in an Earthquake zone, so you can't really compare?

You should move out of London - we're within commuting distance (my husband does it every day) but have a 6 bed Georgian farmhouse with acres for less than that each month!

Tell that to Tokyo! San Francisco, too.

After a couple more years (or kids) we may join you. Or buy a house in Peckham. Apparently Peckham is the new Brixton (and Brixton is the new Clapham, and Clapham is the new Chelsea).
