Universal health care is a wonderful thing but wont be coming to the US anytime ever.
And whilst everyone's posts on here suggesting that no medical health coverage equals big trouble is most certainly true, bear in mind, people do get by without it. About 45 million of them for sure.
I have friends who never have had hc and don't intend to get it either. For them, it works.
Before I get leaped on, I am simply saying that you can exist without it. I am not commenting on the desirability of that course of action. With a European, esp. British mindset its inconceivable, but not impossible.

This is NOT medicare/medicade. This is charity, (from a hosptial) MOST american's are not even aware of this. I asked my american friend once if she had every heard of it and her answer was
Non US citizens are eligable for this too. Im not sure whether its available for doctor visits and the likes, but 1 billion % it is available for A & E or ER

I do not know anybody who wishes to be in this situation.
Just a couple of examples:
A friend was diagnosed with breast cancer, fortunately she qualified for medicare.
A friend who is a cyclist was out with his group, one crashed, pretty nasty but was insistent they could not call an ambulance, he could not afford it.
Where we are, anything really nasty requires a Helicopter trip, I think the going rate is $15,000.

Fair point. Doesnt seem to make sense really. Why pay down a load of cash instead of buy the cover which the co. can probably tax deduct anyways.

There is NO national much of anything here. I think that's one of the hardest concepts for Europeans (oh yes you are!) to get used to. You'd do a lot better if you thought of the US as the EU; states are more akin to separate countries in the EU than counties in the UK.
Hospitals may be required to treat people, but that's not the same as some structured charity program.
There might be a good reason 'most Americans' haven't heard of it, don't you think?

I know several others have called you out on this one, but I'm going to also. I have always encouraged your posts and your positive attitude and not thought you were looking through rose tinted glasses, as some have accused you of, but this.. really.
