Default L1A Children Social Security SSN

When I arrived and applied for SSN cards for myself and my wife, I had also filled in forms for the children who also moved here on L2 visas. The officer said repeatedly and it was confirmed by my relocation consultant that they do not issue SSNs to children of L1 visa folk. Since then several times i've been told I need SSNs for the children: the health insurance company say they need it and it seems the tax returns forms i've been advised to complete 1040EZ, has a mandatory box for dependents SSNs.

Any advise very welcome...
best regards
Jon

Children on L2 visas aren't allowed Social Security Numbers but can apply for Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN).

http://www.irs.gov/individuals/artic...=96287,00.html

Who needs an ITIN?

IRS issues ITINs to foreign nationals and others who have federal tax reporting or filing requirements and do not qualify for SSNs. A non-resident alien individual not eligible for a SSN who is required to file a U.S. tax return only to claim a refund of tax under the provisions of a U.S. tax treaty needs an ITIN.

Other examples of individuals who need ITINs include:

• A nonresident alien required to file a U.S. tax return
• A U.S. resident alien (based on days present in the United States) filing a U.S. tax return
• A dependent or spouse of a U.S. citizen/resident alien
• A dependent or spouse of a nonresident alien visa holder

we had to get our L2 kids ITINS. Just fill the ITIN form out very carefully and give exactly the evidence they ask for. Our acct did ours wrong and they were returned twice before i got involved myself and sent in what I thought and got it approved. You submit the itin forms at the same time you submit the tax returns so stuffing up the ITIN forms can delay the tax return being finalised.

The following is the link to form W-7 instructions. Make sure you have the required documents notarized.
