At one of my work sites they've got a Keurig machine in the break room, which is very nice, especially in comparison to the horrid, horrid sludge coming out of the machine at my main office, and who's in charge of that thing anyway?
But for home use? Hell naw, too expensive. I can get better coffee from freshly ground beans, filtered water and a $25 coffee maker.

We usually have a mug of coffee each in the morning...the rest of the day we drink tea or water...so K cups works best for us. We bought our Keurig on sale from Bed Bath and Beyond...it's a single cup coffee maker and cost around $50.

There is also a Colombian roast which is quite good - that and the French roast are the only ones that I drink.

All of the vanilla, hazelnut etc flavors are terrible as, of course, are all of the "decaf" variants ...

We love it, due to the no waste. One cup or 6. Especially for tea or even some cup o soup.

Costs a bit more than a 12 cup but IMO worth it.

Most folks think it is a German company for the name, just marketing.

Bed Bath does some some deals.

Keurig is owned by Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR).

The coffee machines being discussed here, not just Keurig, can be problematic at the lower end of the price spectrum (fail early).

They are a means to an end.

That end is to have people come back time and again to buy coffee.

In little plastic pots.

At wonderful markups - if you happen to be a shareholder. Just look at GMCR!

If they were doing the same in the IT industry they'd be named after a fruit and branded as evil (!)

We have a Keurig at work, as well as other makes, because many of the manufacturers use our products in their manufacture.

They are convenient to use, quick, involve a lot less fannying around, and for this many people are happy to pay the premium - even me from time to time.

If you clean them as directed, and use filtered water, they'll last longer. Buy them from Costco and get them replaced when they fail, you'll be fine.

My only gripe, and it could be my taste buds, but the 'german chocolate cake' flavoured coffee tastes like borderline insipid, yet slightly rancid cocoa. They do a mountain dew flavour coffee - I have no idea what that means - but i like it (bit of Dick Emery there if you're old enough!)

Enjoy!!

I'm still using the $20 Mr Coffee I bought 10 years ago. I like really strong coffee black and rather bitter, buy the one posted as rocket java at the local store and grind it espresso. Four rounded tablespoons for a 20 oz mug is just right.

I'm having a heart attack just reading that ;)

It's an acquired taste. I can drink one in the evening while online and still fall asleep sitting up in my chair.

I have been thinking about buying a Keurig as well. I hem and haw every time I see it at Costco. It seems a bit flimsy though.

Slightly off topic, but still about coffee...

I'm tempted by an espresso machine that grinds the beans on demand. Anyone have a recommendation?

The Cuisinart incarnation of the Keurig holds up a little longer than the standard Keurig and is a little more robust. Regardless of make I have found their customer service to be excellent, if your machine dies while under warranty just ring them and they will usually send you a new machine, no questions asked.

Might suggest how much they make from the coffee itself... They are really a coffee company after all, NOT a coffee machine company...

AND good to hear the customer service is good.

I used to have a room-mate that drank coffee to help him sleep - very weird.

I've had coffees from Keurigs (and other similar machines) before, and while some are nice, I could never justify the expense. Then again, I didn't drink coffee for years, until maybe a couple of years ago when my tastebuds changed again, and they decided to prefer coffee over tea :)

My parents have a cup of coffee before bed every night and have done so for (hundreds of) years.

I have a DeLonghi Magnifica. It grinds beans, makes espresso and capucchino with the frother wand. I have only had it a few months, so I don't know what the longetivity is like. I like using Illy espresso beans, as that gives me the strong, dark coffee that I like. Nothing worse than weak, insipid, tasteless coffee or flavoured ones. The grind, strength, and size are all adjustable until you figure out which suits you best. I got it in Costco about $400+. I was wanting a Gaggia, but that was way more expensive.
