Make sure that you look at the most tax efficient way to be paid for relocation. My OH arranged part in pounds for the UK expenses ( up to 8K) and then the rest in dollars which got heavily taxed in the US. If they haven't already included it ask for tax preparation for the length of your contract.
There are things you don't think about which soon mount up eg small kitchen appliances etc. The other thing is to make sure that all your vaccination records are up to date and get any you need done at home along with any medical history, I only say this if that you decide to go for green cards saves you some time and money.
The one thing we didn't pay close enough attention to was medical insurance, although both of you are young, you don't know when a stupid accident could happen. We had a policy where we payed and then were reimbursed. Our youngest daughter had an accident which involved an ambulance, x-ray, staples and follow up visits costing us $2K, received from the insurer 4 months later!

Don't know if you can back claim it if you didn't claim it, but it is something for accountant type person. I don't really understand how it all works, but my company put the costs down in such a way to minimise it as salary and said they would help me sort out as much as possible come tax time.

That $15k isn't gone, it's just spent some time in the IRS's wallet!
