Anyone mentioned Cub Foods yet, cheap and cheerful and OK for the basics. I liked Dominicks, nice produce.

Binny's on Rooservelt in Glen Ellyn also has a great selection too, and there is a Trader Joe's right next to it which is very nice. I go to Joe's quite a bit as we are vegaterians and they have great food there for us.

To USBound - I think you really want to shot for somewhere close to a train station though. Arlington Park is on the UP Northwestern line, Schaumburg or Rosselle are on the Milwaukee NW line.
There are more trains on the UP NW line and Arlington Park is easy to park at too - that would leave you to look at the east of Schaumburg, Rolling Meadows, Arlington Heights, south Hoffman Estates or even Palatine for rentals - a pretty big area.

Dogs could be a problem. Most rentals will not take dogs...if they do it's usually one small one.

quarantine? I know LA is bad... but damn it aint THAT bad.
my wife is in charge of finding places... but just today she found 25 places within our price range with everything we need. I think we'll be fine.

I'm glad you were able to find somewhere, just our of interest are the places your looking at private rentals, a regular house so to speak or these rental complexes that are everywhere?
