Default IDP (Internation Driving Permit) - UK Resident visiting USA

Hi,
I am visiting the USA for just under 90 days this summer 2004. I will be entering on the VWP and staying with a friend for the duration. We intend to travel to other nearby states, but I will be mainly in NY state. I've never been a resident in the US. I don't have an SSN, etc.

During a trip a Post Office here in England, I noticed an advert for an "Application for International Driving Permit". It is only £4.00 but I'm wondering if this would be a good idea for me to get, as I will be driving in different states. It lasts for a year.

Has anyone else heard of it, used it, etc? I'd like to feel legal and safe and £4.00 is nothing really. From what it says, this permit concept has existed since 1949. The Post Office for this purpose is an "agent of the A.A."

Rgds,
Smaug

Yes, and the reason you'd want an international permit is for visiting countries where law enforcement couldn't understand your licence written in English (the IDP is effectively only a translation of your exisiting licence). So the international permit is absolutely unnecessary.
