I need decent bread!!
Where can I find a decent loaf in america? I'm a brit living in the states. Jeeze, I buy a different loaf everyday just hoping it's not sweet. I'm craving a decent butty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You will most likley need to bake your own. My mother used to do it, and no supermarket bread could even compare.

Natures Own makes sugar free bread and low carb bread, which is pretty good.
If you have a Publix in your area- their bakery dept makes a 'White mountain Bread' loaf, which you can ask them to slice- that's really good. |
Panera Bread or Atlanta Bread Company. Freshly baked, crusty, all kinds and not sweet! Just like a nice ploughmans would be in a country pub!

I'm craving a decent butty!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm guessing such neighbourhoods have bakeries or at least shops selling European style bread, i.e. less sugar, more fibre, more texture. In my area (I'm sure it's less cosmopolitan than where you live), there's a few European-style bakeries. I'm most fortunate that there's a German bakery (named Gulghupf) only mins from where I work. Of course, the bread is more costly and contains fewer preservatives and hence has a shorter shelf life but I can't eat American bread. I certainly can't buy the bread for eating at home. My US spouse feels the same way (I swear I saw him hugging a loaf of M&S bread at Christmas when were visiting. He denies he was hugging the bread of course but I know what I saw). NC Penguin |
I buy my bread from a local deli .. its expensive @ $5.00 a loaf but at least it tastes nice. So much for Hovis :(

Originally posted by effi The only one I found when I lived in Philly was Maiers italian. It is the only one that tastes remotely like Brit bread. You should be able to get it in Jersey. We ended up buying a bread machine. It works a treat |

Hmmm, a bread machine. Now there's an idea :)
Nothing better than the smell of freshly baked bread :D Talking of preservatives, has anyone noticed how long a loaf lasts here before going stale and then mouldy. It seems to last for weeks. :scared: thing2 |
