I'm a slow eater and if I happen to have a salad as an appetizer (usually part of a set meal), I usually keep my salad when the entree arrives so I'm eating both the salad and entree together. That has never been a problem with servers.

With a family and a large meal I'd make from scratch, just not worth the hassle for two people though, only one who'll eat the gravy, so I use granules...plus a lot easier to use when not doing a roast for bangers and mash...

Always make my gravy from scratch, even if only for two people Tonight I will be making cube steaks with onions and gravy and might need to use a cube or two to make it more flavorful. If I do, then I will not use salt.

However, sometimes since it is only two of us and the quantity of meat is small, I use cubes to heighten the flavor of the gravy. My sister will use a can of stock when she makes hers.

At a NY diner no less, I sat down and sked "Do you have mashed potatoes ?"
"yes sir"
"Do you have brown gravy ?"
"Yes sir"
"Do you have peas ro baked beans ?"
"Yes sir"
"I already know you have Irish sausages so put them all together please"
The poor guy looked stunned but wandered off and returned after a while with4 separate dishes, one with bangers, one with mash, one with beans, one with gravy ... but hey ! it worked
Good for you mate. We had an Irish pub open in our own little Burgh here, so in due course we decided to give it a whirl for lunch. The bangers & mash were fantastic and could easily feed 2. Strange thing - lunch portion is $6 and has 3 bangers. Dinner portion is $12 and has 5 bangers. Irish indeed.....

FFS it's hardly something that's exotic or hard to make.

Mashed potatoes, gravy and sausages plonked on it. I'm sure you can get sausages and probably Bisto granules on your travels as a truck driver.

PS I had cornflakes this morning. They were Kellogs and looked and tasted just like the ones I used to buy in England. Amazing!!!

Steak, chips and peas for dinner (with onion rings - dangerous!)

I going to have to stop you right there. I'm betting you actually had cottage pie NOT shepherds pie. A common misconception

No, that is incorrect. Shepherds pie is made with ground lamb not minced lamb

Funny guy

We bought a lamb from the county fair and we have a friend that has a meat market and he processed it for us so I now have lots of cuts of lamb. Next on the menu is Cornish Pasties

(should that be ground or minced, sir?)
