"God" should get over himself and just sign his bloody license properly IMHO.
Of course, he does live in the land of the free so he has the right to refuse. Just hope he likes walking.

Now if it says "Sign name here" that may be a bit different, but "Signature", well that could surely be anything.

One's name as written by oneself.
The act of signing one's name.
- but I don't think the issue is really a semantic one (i.e., it's not about whether "signature" means "your name"). That discussion could go on forever (like the one on the UK board about whether Australia is sunny and hot - talk about watching paint dry).
In my opinion, it's about being bloody-minded when a reasonable request is made.
I can't think of any real reason why someone should refuse to sign their real name on a driver's license if it's requested, rather than something silly like "God", "Daffodil", or "Your granny's *rse".

I remember being taught never to put an 'X' where you wanted people to sign as it could be judged as a fraudulent attempt at someones signature.

SIGNATURE - A mark when the person making the same intended it as such.
1 USC
To write one's name to an instrument of writing in order to give the effect intended; the name thus written is called a signature.
The signature is usually made at the bottom of the instrument but in wills it has been held that when a testator commenced his will With these words;, "I, A B, make this my will," it was a sufficient signing but this decision is said to be absurd.
By signature is understood the act of putting down a man's name, at the end of an instrument, to attest its validity. The name thus written is also called a signature.
It is not necessary that a party should write his name himself, to constitute a signature; his mark is now beld sufficient though he was able to write. A signature made by a party, another person guiding his band with his consent, is sufficient.
eccl. law. The name of a sort of rescript, without seal, containing the supplication, the signature of the pope or his delegate, and the grant of a pardon.
