Incorrect assumption about the IRS. Tens of millions get refunds every year from the IRS. It's pretty much normal since PAYE doesn't exist here and there are so many deductions that can be used to decrease one's tax liability.

Well the association is a joke...but they don't vet membership anyway, so even if you weren't in the industry, it wouldn't matter....it's $50 a year membership, so pretty cheap anyway.

If you're over on TCE, there were threads from some indies and contractors talking about umbrella companies to work under as contractors to get in on medical insurance, so might be worth searching out. If you ain't a member, well good luck getting in before the apocalypse
