Unhappy Hurricane Season

As someone new to this whole scary issue, just wondered how other people in hurricane areas have coped. I know all the general advice, but what did you do to protect yourself and your stuff? do you always evacuate?
I have been thinking of buying those big plastic boxes to put in paperwork etc. I am also discouraging people from visiting until I have experienced a season and know how best to deal with things, am I over reacting?

I've only been through one so far; just talk to the neigbours, they'll know about the flood prone areas etc...

The rest will depend on which category hurricane is coming through and where exactly it's hitting land.

Unfortunately there are no neighbours who are not new here as this whole housing development was decimated and lost their rooves through flood, has been rebuilt, hopeflly to better specifications. Was just wanting general ideas, ie if you evacuated were there things you wished you had brought that you hadnt thought of? Sometimes people who have been through it have learnt something from the experience that isnt in the guidebooks.

My in-laws left the water on to their ice making fridge; when the electricty went the ice melted and flooded the kitchen.

So, let me get this straight

you paid to move somewhere that got trashed in a hurricane and want some tips on how to protect yourself?

Move somewhere else

Even posters who got quite indifferent to the threat came out with some horror stories after last years storms

Not much of where we are wasnt affected, we had 10 days to get a house and there are plenty of people still living in FEMA trailers there wasnt much choice in houses
Moving is not an option.

I love it when the Floridian members of BE (you know who you are) take the piss out of Gruff, Bob and myself for shovelling snow all winter and then we take the piss as they shovel up whats left of their houses in the summer.

Heck I never thought about that. Must remember if the lecky is off for a long time to empty the ice out of the freezer and turn the water off.
