Default How are you treated for being British?

Hello, at some in the future I might want to go a live in the United States if I can somehow get a visa.

I would just like ask how are you treated when people find out you are English/British (im really asking English people here since Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish are general viewed very differently)

As you know we English have a bad reputation the world over (quite deserved in a lot of ways)

Do people treat you badly when they find out you are English/British

Do you get a lot of hate for your accent?

Do you get a lot of abuse about things like colonialism, the royal family, food, teeth etc?

Is it hard to make friends if you are English/British in a America? Is it social stigma for being English/British?

Does being English/British make it harder to date someone?

Does being English/British make it harder to get job even if you have the correct visa?

The reason I'm asking these is that the Internet and social media is widespread of Americans hating on British people and all things British (food, accents, monarchy, looks, culture).

I've never been to America so I want know is it the same in real life?

Social media makes it sound like why would any british person ever step foot in America let alone live there.

Please give your experiences whether good bad.

Thanks

There are over 330 million people in the US. A tiny proportion of them may have an entrenched attitude, either favourable or unfavourable, towards those things you mentioned. The vast majority couldn't care less and don't single out people born in England for special treatment.
If you go looking for sensationalist stories on social media, you'll find them. Suggest you give that a miss.

Never really had a problem personally - if anything it's a conversation starter albeit a repetitive one. I find a lot of Americans like to talk to you about the time they went to London or whatever. However, being English does make you look American enough, so most folks will leave you alone I don't feel like an 'outsider'

British food is re-occurring one, but once I've made a nice pie/roast/pasty/whatever for someone they usually change their tune.

Substitute "America" with Australia, Spain, Canada, Italy or just about any other country in the world and do a social media search. Same result.

Every country has people who dislike the British, or who just dislike foreigners in general (19 years in Australia taught me that) and every country has people who don't give a monkey's where you came from!

The hate for British people in the USA is tiny in comparison to the hate for the USA in Britain.

People's reaction to finding out I am British tends to be indifference, but every now and then someone will be enamored with my horrible estuary accent.

I was asked once by a nurse if we speak English in the U.K.

Do not worry, most do not know where U.K. or Ireland are on a map, know they exist, or who was fought against in the War of Independence. Education in some regions really is that pi$$ poor.

If you are contemplating living here, the best thing you can do is actually visit the country. It's a big place and the various areas are very, very different from one another.

There's something very familiar about the OP.

I think you’re right! Especially considering that the post was made during the night in the UK!
