I was wondering how soon after the marriage you can file AOS. Do you need a copy of the marriage license to submit with the paperwork? I hear it could take 4-6 weeks to get an official copy of a marriage license?

Yes you need a copy of the marriage license (depending on the state it may be a
completely different document; in VA the marriage license is signed and then becomes
the marriage certificate). The time to get this depends on the state you are in. In
VA the priest was required to send it to the courthouse that issued the license in
the first place within 5 days and was then immediately available if you went in in
person. Some places allow you to hand carry the license back to the courthouse to get
it expedited.

We filed 2 days after getting married, but we could have filed the day after,
wouldn't surprise me if someone has managed it same day but we filed in person and
distance did not permit us that! We got a number of certified copies of the
certificate immediately after the ceremony, as Andy said it differs by state. Suggest
you contact the place where you want to get married and ask their procedure.

Anytime after you get the marriage certificate in Florida you can get married and get
certified copies of it the same day

Thanks all for your help. I am getting married in Las Vegas, Nevada (not by Elvis). I live in California so I guess I will be waiting unless I get my hands on an official copy.

We got married in Vegas. Actually of the city at Red Rock Park. I hand carried the
minister's copy to the Clark County Recorder's office by white strech limo about 3 or
4 pm. The certified copies were ready the next morning.
