Both federal tax (www.irs.gov) and state tax (http://www.state.ny.us/)
Yes, there is banding.

I can't give an authoritative opinion but I think you will find the tax bight less
than in Britain. Also, living in other states near New York may lower your income tax
but they find other ways to tax you so that it comes out about the same.
I don't know the current tax rates but the round figure usually quoted for a NYC
resident making $100,000 is 38% total for Federal, State & City. I believe that
figure is before taking allowable deductions. What I can tell you is that it is
considerably lower today than it was in the early 1980s.

Everything you want to find out about taxation in NY can be found on the official New

Oh.
Yes, we have tax brackets, but both New York State and New York City taxes are
generally quite regressive.

Yes, that's true, but it's also true that you get much less for your taxes. In fact,
most of what you get isn't visible. You have to make yourself aware of what your tax
dollars buy. In Britain, and many other countries, your tax money at work is much
obviouser.
Unless you're a multi-zillionaire, taxes should be among the least of your
considerations on a move.

Probably because there is no VAT in the USA.

Love to know how you are going to get a work permit just like that! It is extremely
difficult! My daughter is always having to get hers re-newed every three yrs and it
is not always automatic, and they tell her it will take 4 yrs at least to get a green
card and many thousands of dollars for the lawyers fees! I often wonder how other
people just seem to swan off to the States to live and she has such a hassle! Elma

If you do as a non-immigrant, save all your receipts that are potentially
tex-deductible. Non-immigrants aren't allowed the sandard deduction - you have to
itemise everything.

Some people hold dual citizenships. Some have special skills. Some maybe sent there
by their home company.

Not necessarily. Last year I had an opportunity to move to Oregon (which has no
sales tax) from Washington (which has no income tax). Even though I'm not a
"multi-zillionaire," taxes were a consideration. Not the primary one, but not
trivial either.
If I wanted to pay income tax, I would move to one of the 43 states that have one.

Company sponsorship so hassle removed as much as possible anyway... still takes time etc. Helps also if you are married to a Yank!
