The pilots are never bored. It's a huge challenge just to land a plane on many days because of high cross winds. Some days the mail and supply plane from South America can't land. On those days, it's free booze in the officer and enlisted clubs. You can't go outside for very long with an English complexion -- there's no ozone to protect you. My friend did get to take a helo ride and see the fabled penguins, though alas no they did not follow the chopper with a collective gaze.

Gosh, isn't this making Florida seem like paradise?!

Well worth reading someone's diary who's done a four-month hardship tour there.... they really cross the days off the chuff chart.
