Hotels in Las Vegas
DH and I are going to Las Vegas for a few days for 4th July. If anyone has any idea if and where there is any fireworks shows. We are also looking for a nice hotel, 3-5 star that any of you have been to within the last year , on or near the Strip, no flea pits, please. We aren't gamblers, but maybe have a few tries on the slots, and also looking for recommendations for shows and where to get tickets a bit cheaper. Thanks.

Bellagio, Paris, Caesar's Tower rooms, Venetian, Wynn - all nice hotels.
Bellagio and Paris very central.

IMO the Wynn is too far out...as is the Mandalay Bay, Luxor. My choice is the Bellagio, Venetian, Ceasars and Paris...in that order. If I wasn't too bothered about the central location I would stay at The Wynn or 4 Seasons within the Mandalay Bay Hotel. I stay clear of the 'family' hotels...Excalibur, Treasure Island...I also prefer the newer hotels.

Bellagio OR Venetian.
Venetian are all suites - with great eating places.
Bellagio, more central - nice rooms - GREAT bakeries. OMG!

We found Harrah's to be moderate in quality and price, and is also central.
As for fireworks, might be a bit far out, but there are some hills/mountains you can drive to which give a good view. If you're interested I'll find out which spot.

Another +1 for the Bellagio.

Re: Hotels in Las Vegas
I would say the majority of the hotels on the strip would be classed as at least 3 star. Maybe the older ones at the north end of the strip, the Riviera, Circus Circus and the Statosphere maybe pushing it. The Excalibur and The Luxor have some of the best rates on the strip. With MGM, New York New York and Planet Hollywood a short walk away, they are in good locations at the south end of the strip. Plus there is a regular bus service that runs up and down the strip for tourists that is very good. The one time I stayed more central on the strip, at TI, I paid a little more for the room, but quite a bit more for the resort tax, something to maybe bear in mind.

Resort tax...good point ...to cover the amenities ie pool etc. I don't know whether there still is but there used to be a room/suite tax on top of the room rate. I believe there is also a daily fee in some hotels for wifi. All those extra fees really add up at the end of your stay.

IMO all the hotels you have mentioned have seen better days...thus the better rates.

The only thing it has is the indoor amusement park.

On the shows, we went to La Reve as it was slightly cheaper than O - Fantastic!
Still not exactly cheap though...

I wouldn't stay there, but the casino at Casino Royale is worth a visit to start your evenings festivities. It's er, very retro (polite way of saying dated), but for years they did $1 michelob's and frozen margarita's. that's not a happy hour deal, that's all day every day. I haven't been for a couple of years, so they might have put the price up a bit, but still a good place to start the evening in an old school casino with cheap booze, and right in the heart of the strip.
