Hidden expenses of family life in US?

Re: Hidden expenses of family life in US?
The only other thing would be if you have an 'alternate' number pad, as Pulaski mentioned earlier. If there is a set of letter keys (he said UIO, JKL and M) that have numbers written on them, you can use those instead.
Failing that, you can use the character map in Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools and copy/paste in any symbol you want from there.

You could just use $0.XX instead of XX¢, of course ...

Alternately, where context is understood, .XX works too.
Edit: I actually do remember the last time I used XX¢. I handwrote it on something at the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh last year. Before that, I don't remember using it at all unless I was on an actual typewriter and trying to simulate salty language. I think I usually write "XX cents" if I am forced to.
Further edit: Hardly anyone remembers the correct way to write a check for under a dollar amount. I was taught in school years ago but it's so odd that it's almost a good bar bet. The correct format is "ONLY [number of cents spelled out] cents" and then you must cross out "dollars" at the end of the check line. Hyphenate the number of cents if necessary ("forty-five") and make sure to put a 0 for dollars when you write the amount in the numerical field ($0 45/00).

It's pretty common practice to write 75p, rather than £0.75 in the UK, but I have noticed the $0.XX notation seems to be standard here (I'm in accounting so I use it as a matter of course anyway).

Mine is on my desk -- Isolated references to amounts of money are spelled out for whole numbers of one hundred or less: "Children can ride for seventy-five cents."
