Hmmmm. If your "partner" really wants you to join him he should do the
research. I don't think your chances are at all good, but check with the U.S.
consulate for details.

The US Embassy in Grosvenor Square in Central London can help you with all the
information you need. But yes, he has to apply in the US to the INS and you do have
to get married. If they agree you will be granted a special entry in order for the
marriage to take place. The INS will also check that you are married... and not in
name only like in "Green Card" the movie.

You could always decide not to come here at all. Have you looked into welfare
where you are?

What do you have against marriage??? I sure wouldn't make that kind of move without a
FORMAL commitment. Give your head a shake, woman, and listen up to
Dr. Laura.

Consult a good immigration lawyer in your country.

It's gonna have to ba a *good* lawyer, from my interpretation of the original post.

BTW, a free-standing "immigration lawyer" is possibly the worst investment she could
make; there is a high degree of corruption and incompetence in the field. She'd be
far better off with one of the many charitable organizations that offer such
assistance.

Sorry, without the "commitment" of marriage, short of winning the immigration
lottery, you have virtually no chance of coming over to stay permanently to be with
your partner. Those are the rules.

I think the consensus of opinion was that your chances were in the range
negligible to nil.

Why doesn't your partner in Florida offer some help. Or you could even start here:

If this is such an important relationship to you, why is it that your boyfriend
doesn't want to marry you?

Basically you have been told you can't. Staying with the man you love is not a
sufficient reason for immigrating to the U.S. Immigration in general is limited to
close relatives of U.S. citizens or Green Card holders, spouses, children, parents,
siblings, or those who win the Green Card lottery, are granted asylum or such. You
don't qualify.

A few are granted temporary permission to stay and work in the U.S. if they have a
skill the U.S. needs AND most importantly a business employer who is willing to
sponsor them. This is very difficult to get and out of reach of the average
immigrant wannabe.

Find a job in the US from some company which is willing to sponsor you for a work
permit. Don't laugh (the other US readers on this net), the US is experiencing huge
shortages in nurses and teachers. If you are competent in either of these fields you
may have a chance.

Why? Is there something wrong with asking legal advice of the people best qualified
to give it -- lawyers?

There's such a thing as going to the horse's mouth, and not just thrashing
around wildly.
