Well, she actually lives in Stanley, which is right next to Newcastle. I don't have any problem understanding her on the internet. But she sent me some youtube videos of people speaking the Geordie dialect, and it was damned near incomprehensible. I love cats, and she told me that the word for cat is moggie. That just sounds like such a cool word for a cat.

We were laughing with our Scottish chippy yesterday; he just did a radio interview and was making fun of his own accent. He says as long as he slows down and doesn't get nervous, he thinks it 'plays' OK. Remarkably, I understand him better than any of the Scots I met in Greece.

Hi there,
So I don't really belong here, technically! I'm a US citizen with a British fiance, and we have a daughter together. Currently I am working on getting her passports and me my visa to move over there next year. It is a very daunting process as you all know in some way or another. There is no good forum for people like me, and you all seem very nice, so I hope you don't mind the intrusion!
I have an icebreaker question: What led you to move FROM the UK? I wonder as I am so desperate to move there now.
Have a good day/evening!

I was walking along a very busy street in Newcastle city centre at around 5pm one weekday afternoon when two totally bladdered and blootered lads - c 22/25 years old - lined themselves up against a wall of a bank and relieved themselves of much of their excess booze in their bladders, much of it trickling down across the pavement with pedestrians stepping over it in a passive way as if it was an everyday occurrence. It probably is.

I went for an interview at Newcastle upon Tyne university in 2000 with a view to admission - I went to Leeds in the end. Newcastle is a very attractive city architecturally - the city centre streets are lined with the most gorgeous Georgian /Regency style buildings. The Metro transportation system is great, too - I loved riding on it. it's true that generally speaking the locals are friendly and very approachable, made much better if you have a passing acquaintance with a strong Geordie accent as I did as we have loads of Geordies coming up here to Edinburgh - their capacity for alcohol consumption is almost as great as that of Glaswegians.

Re: Hello Newbie saying hi - What made you move from the UK?
We moved for a few reasons. We were in a rubbish school catchment area, we wanted to live somewhere cheaper and less over-crowded, and we love the outdoors.
We moved when we did for two reasons - the exchange rate was great, and hubs was offered a job in the US.
We sold a 4-bed semi-detached house in the UK, and bought a 5-bed detached house on an acre of land for $100k less.
The schools where we ended up are excellent, and in our area your children are guaranteed a place in the town where you pay your property taxes - none of this stress waiting to find out about school places that you get in most of the UK.
We both get as much holiday here as we got in the UK. Our health costs are higher, but then we get a much better service and we're both paid more.
Can't really think of many downsides other than it's a bit heartbreaking leaving family behind.
Hope you enjoy the UK - it does have lots of wonderful things going for it.

I left England because I wanted to live in New York City. Unfortunately ended up in Hartford, CT where DH had a house.
