Both! :) How can she not like onions? The building blocks of so many meals!

I'm not being 100% accurate, she likes onion flavour, she just doesn't like actually biting into one. If we are cooking with onions, they're either cooked until they merge with the sauce, or I get them all :D

My hubby thinks I am nuts for cooking in a saucepan, he microwaves just about everything.

It has to be Heinz beans but they are hard to come by here and cost a fortune. Baked beans here tend too be too sweet.

Have you tried the Branston Brand beans? They are a UK import too and very close in taste to Heinz, my sister in the UK prefers them to Heinz.

Yes. Also my granny used to put them in a normal beef mince pie too when she'd bake them. Very nice indeed.

Years ago, in the UK, you used to be able to buy a frozen ready meal that was shepards pie, it had beans in it too.

I'll only but Heinz beans in NZ even though they are more expensive than Watties BB (same company but add more sugar to that brand ). The Kiwis are nuts though. Add loads of sugar & salt to all their processed foods. Add gelatine to sour cream .

Thank god they make decent wine or I'd be stuffed!

I remember back home they brought out a baked bean pizza!!! Think it was possible Heinz along with McCain, can't remember, but damn good. I have tried making one myself and it was absolutely delicious. I have also made a bean and cheese toastie, delicious, just like beans on toast with cheese on top, only not as messy :D

Why would you keep a tin of beans in the fridge?

Most people make their beans....and those that don't, usually don't keep left overs in the tin but in a tub, in the fridge.

It leaves the sauce too watery IMO. Hubby doesn't mind so I nuke his. :D

I'm with you - beans in the microwave are crap. They don't heat evenly and if you're planning on having mash, the more watery sauce doesn't create the desired tastegasm that is the whole point of mixing the two :)

The more I think of it though, the more I realise it was HP beans that had the better sauce. Am I going mental, or was the that case?

You're going mental...there's no other brand that comes anywhere close to Heinz IMO. ;):D

I think it was Heinz, and I'm just being stupid

I know I'm right that the (Heinz) ones with the little sausages in had a thicker sauce though, I'm convinced of that.

Okay, I need the Brits to weigh in!

Long story short, on April 29th (when the royal wedding took place), we had my parents in to visit and decided to wake up early, cook a fry-up and enjoy the festivities.

Our breakfast included coffee (sorry, guys), eggs, Irish bangers, tomato, toast and Heinz beans.

At one point we had a bit of a blow-out when I was encouraging my mother to try the beans with her breakfast and my father exclaimed that they were the most vile thing ever! (Apparently he has bad childhood memories of being forced to eat something similar. My husband and I like them!)

He works at a visitor's center in a tourist town in the US and has since asked each British tourist he's met their opinion of Heinz beans. Apparently they have ALL agreed with him that they are terrible, and that our barbecued variety is infinitely better.

I find that hard to believe, or I'm just plain stubborn.

So ... what do you think? Are they vile? Yummy? Couldn't you care less?

Cheers,
Kaffy

Heinz beans are gross I love baked beans but not Heinz.

To give the US beans their due, I do quite like the Boston style ones, in the dark sauce, or the homestyle ones that SWMBO usually gets for barbies and the like.

Mix in a load of HP and it takes the edge off the sweetness. Doesn't go with mash at all though!

Branston beans are definitely the way forward, although I haven't seen them for sale over here. Luckily I go to the UK 3 or 4 times a year with work and some back with a dozen tins in my luggage!
