On my first visit back I was buying multipacks of them and scoffing them down cold

I used to love cold beans :o

I'd eat them right out of the tin. I was 6 at the time, though.

Right out of the tin tastes best

They have those convenient pull tops

I must admit I eat a lot of food right over the sink ... cuts down on cleanup. Then (unless it's tuna fish) you can just lick the fork and put it back in the drawer.

They didn't when I was 6

Now I come to think of it, it might actually have been HP beans. Were they the ones with a thicker sauce?? Either way cold beans (in 1985) were the dogs bollocks.

Also, is there any better taste in the world than when Heinz/HP/Tescos 9p special (whatever your bean of choice) combines with extra-buttery mashed potatoes? I think not :)

Very ecologically sound

Personally as a Yank, I've had both and perfer Campbell's pork and beans or Bush's original myself.

Have never seen anyone eat or prefer their beans cold other than 7 bean salad.

I like Canadian Heinz beans but don't know if they are the same as Heinz in the UK. We always have the pork & molasses ones not the ones with tomato sauce. Now that we are in the US I buy the Bush's original ones.

HP sauce from Canada looks just like the HP sauce you get in the UK but according to hubby and son it does not taste the same so we have to have it sent in from Canada as I can only find the UK version here.

And I can't imagine eating beans cold!

When I saw this thread go up last night I knew it would be a goer!

The UKer here prefers Bush's to anything UK. And I had nothing to do with that!

Some readers may remember 1980s low-brow jazz mag Razzle, in which ladies were caught by the camera doing far worse with baked beans in a paddling pool on the centre spread...

Things I've learned from this thread ...

The Brits my Dad is talking to are NOT representative of the population. Or, he's selectively only sharing the opinions of those who agree with him. I suspect the latter ...

I need to try Heinz beans on a buttery piles of potatoes. I've only tried them on toast, and darn it, I like them.

Side note - this Yank would never eat cold beans. Room temperature at a cook-out (because they've cooled), maybe, but cold? Blech!
