Not all American Express cards have automatic CDW. It is included in Platinum last time I looked, but I have a Gold and it would have been extra. However, the US Bank Visa had it. Go figure.

Also, CDW may not be good in some countries. The last time I paid for it was in Israel. It felt kind of strange in another way -- in the US it is often not considered safe if your car is OBVIOUSLY a rental. In Israel, the car is labeled on all sides with the company decals -- for safety reasons.

Also, do note that CDW is for COLLISION only. One has to worry about liability, no? The Mexicans make you buy a policy good in their country.

In my post #15 I explained that AMEX charges $24 per rental for the extra insurance cover. This is optional and the cover is over and above their standard coverage.

Yes, and annoyingly they don't have the precise info on what is and isn't covered online (or, at least, they didn't when I last needed to check). I believe that Ireland, Australia and Jamaica are among other countries where Amex doesn't throw in coverage when you use their card (if they're throwing it in at all, that is). But every cardholder has to check for themselves...
