It's so important that you make a list of the top five things important to you, and bring them up to the broker or insurance company. This way you can really start to narrow things down by your needs, whether that means low premiums or customer services.

I used them too, (like the original poster, arrived on K1 visa). It cost about $400 for 6 months - and you can use the for up to 2 years I think. Deductible - $1000, cover of $50,000. There are other options too, with cover available up to $1,000,000, and deductables of 0-$2500.

$50K isn't very much...it won't go far if you need hospital treatment.

Agreed and it's sort of backwards. You need coverage that will pay for costs in the $100ks and millions rather than the first $50k.

You were lucky. I wanted to point out to others reading your post that $50K won't go very far if you need hospital treatment.

+1. I had an MRI recently.. My insurance paid 100% but it would have been over $4000 otherwise and that was an outpatient test .

50k is no use at all I blew $36k just being in hospital for 24 hours for surgery.

A minimum policy should be structured to cover anything above some level, not up to some level. You have the possibility of paying off $50k in medical expenses, but not the many $100ks that could mount up if you get seriously ill. So a plan that covers the first $50k of costs is really not doing what insurance is supposed to do ie. protecting you from a catastrophic situation.
Also I'd be interested to see what these visitor insurance plans actually cover.
