Why is it a "disgrace". If you are not living in the United Kingdom and paying British taxes, there is no specific reason why you should expect to retain voting rights.

Any reasons for not registering - other than some might feel it a waste of time?

I was thinking that maybe it'd be a requirement to renew your passport, but apparently not... "It is not necessary for British Nationals/Citizens living or working in the US to register with the Embassy or their local Consulate General."
