The 'burbs around Albany NY sound like abit of you Tom. Not stupidly pricey, plenty of history around, Forts etc, only 2 hours from NYC and about the same to Boston and 3 hours drive to Montreal. A short drive to the Adirondack National park (where Pat Hasler and I live and can swear to its stunning scenery in ANY season) and the Catskill (south). Also handy for trips up to New England. Plenty of work too as its the state capitol. Winters are cold BUT nowhere near as bad as those places in the mountains or by the lakes.

Thanks, sounds like upstate NY, VA or NC might be a good choice. Just starting my research though.
