Yeah, but the sea is full of big, grey boats and full of seamen.

Nashville, Athens of the South?

Housing is affordable so you can send your kids to private school if you have a decent job

Lots of independent art galleries and a few big ones like the Frist http://www.fristcenter.org/site/default.aspx

great universities, like Vanderbilt (tho pricey)

Nice weather - less humid than chicago or boston in the summer for example and you get 4 seasons here

Good transport links, most cities you can get a direct flight to (Boston being the exception)

Seattle then, or Portland, Oregon. Not sure of schools in Portland so can't really recommend - although its up and coming and property prices probably aren't too bad. Seattle home prices can be pricey, but you can look to the outlying areas, Bellevue for example which has a pretty good school district. Seasons are mild all around and its lovely and liberal up here. Close enough to Canada to make weekend trips if you'd like.

Forget the northern East Coast then it's freezing in winter, I hate having to dig my car out in the morning, it being dark at 5pm, and every year people arguing about who is liable to snow-blow their driveways, gets on my threp'ny bits.

So ummm.....The Carolinas?

Why do you want to leave? At least it's not too Goddy here and the climate is good.

Depends what you like doing, and yeah, Maine, I know I moaned about it, but then I'm in my 20s and don't have kids.

It's generally a nice state, places to live, Portland, Bath, York, Camden.

If you like skiing, hiking, water sports, it's all there, the summers are generally not that bad, and the winters, they ain't to bad once you've been there a year.

Schools, they can be shit, but also some really good ones, especially in Portland, private schools are also pretty good and affordable.

Buying a gaff, easy, cheap, lots of land....downer...very high property tax.

Airports, well if your in those southern cities, your a couple hours from Boston, an hour from manchester NH airport, and to get around the country, there's bangor and one in auburn/lewiston and also Portland.

For the culture stuff, seriously, Portland ain't that bad, and bath/york both got lots of art and history.

Mass...well I don't know it all that well, but western mass is supposed to be a lot more affordable and very pretty....easy to get around on the roads, lots of history and all that jazz and easy to get around the country, plus a 5.5 odd hour flight to blighty from boston.

gets dark at 5...blimey, that's late then :D

but the freezing snow, it really ain't that bad after the first year, you do get use to it, and sub zero doesn't feel much worse than freezing...and it's usually sunny out, so doesn't feel as bad out :D

Though digging the car out does suck monkey balls.

I'm thinking somewhere that is accessible to major eastern cities such as NY, Philadelphia???, Washington DC for some culture, history and art galleries. Being a city boy I don't think I'd like to be too far out in the sticks and nowhere too hot like AZ, TX, NV.

Any ideas or recommendations, please give me your reasons why you would recommend it?

DC is a great place to live but Tom the schools are terrible, really terrible, and i'm assuming that that will play a big part in your near future, if you are in a position to afford private schools then Georgetown area would be my choice.
