Seattle then, or Portland, Oregon. Not sure of schools in Portland so can't really recommend - although its up and coming and property prices probably aren't too bad. Seattle home prices can be pricey, but you can look to the outlying areas, Bellevue for example which has a pretty good school district. Seasons are mild all around and its lovely and liberal up here. Close enough to Canada to make weekend trips if you'd like.

Depends what you like doing, and yeah, Maine, I know I moaned about it, but then I'm in my 20s and don't have kids.
It's generally a nice state, places to live, Portland, Bath, York, Camden.
If you like skiing, hiking, water sports, it's all there, the summers are generally not that bad, and the winters, they ain't to bad once you've been there a year.
Schools, they can be shit, but also some really good ones, especially in Portland, private schools are also pretty good and affordable.
Buying a gaff, easy, cheap, lots of land....downer...very high property tax.
Airports, well if your in those southern cities, your a couple hours from Boston, an hour from manchester NH airport, and to get around the country, there's bangor and one in auburn/lewiston and also Portland.
For the culture stuff, seriously, Portland ain't that bad, and bath/york both got lots of art and history.
Mass...well I don't know it all that well, but western mass is supposed to be a lot more affordable and very pretty....easy to get around on the roads, lots of history and all that jazz and easy to get around the country, plus a 5.5 odd hour flight to blighty from boston.
