To the OP, I'm not sure if it's changed, but Pick up trucks are banned from some roads in downtown Chicago, might be worth taking into account.

Its not unless you're way, way out in the sticks.
Also, if you're living downtown and working there too you can prob get away with only using your car at weekends.

For the OP - his price range should be fine - buy one of the Sunday papers and look through the dealers listed there.
Libertyville toyota (Northern 'burbs) carry a half-decent second hand range and they aren't as greasy as some.

Exclamation Re: Good secondhand car/truck under $5000?

Can members behave more friendly to each other? Those who enter into the argument are as bad as each other. The member with the upper hand would be the one who doesn't prolong the argument IMHO and ignores the childish remarks.

Otherwise, I'm closing this thread.

Thanks for the pointer there - also been having a look at craigslist for this as well as other bits. Any craiglist experience? I guess it's no better or worse than the paper?

I sometimes see some really good bargains there - too good to be true? Or just taking advantage of someone else's misfortune?

Take a look at the newpaper advertising in your intended area ...
Although ignore advertised prices for new cars ..they have no
relation to the real price ...No advertising standard here .....

too good too be true ..usually is.......

Probably get a decent Toyota Camry for just under $6K if you are lucky, will be late 90's and might have higher miles, but they are supposed to run forever.
