We've tried anti-static sprays and those things that hang beneath the car to earth it, but nothing seems to work.

When my dog comes up to wipe his dinner on me he often gets a shock on

I heard a long time ago to carry a used dryer sheet like bounce in your pocket helps reduce the static, I've tried it....didn't work that well for me, still got zapped but it was less of one :)

I guess you guys could wear grounding straps on your feet like we have to do in the lab to protect expensive electronics.

Failing that, if it's the car that is getting to you, hold on to something metal on the car itself as you get in and out of the car; or if it's the lock and you're using a key, touch the key to metal on the car before you touch the car.

Have you seen the price of an AC unit in the uk? Plus the fact that you would probably have to get someone to do some building work to install it.

We allways did fine in the UK with the window open in the summer. There are nowhere near as many bugs in the uk as there are here so that was never an issue. Screens don't work too well on windows that swing open on a vertical axis as apposed to horizontally opening ones we have here. On the nights where there was no breeze ( maybe 4 or 5 a summer) we would use the fan to make some breeze.

As for the lack of fans, thats usually because the English love the warm weather in summer. When I talk to people back home, one of the first questions I allways get asked is what the weather is like and how they wish they had those kind of temperatures back home.

Actually, as well as being bloody annoying and painful it can be quite dangerous around gas/petrol stations. See links;

It's rare though, and also the thing with mobile phones, doesn't really happen either...
