I was lucky as my USC wife had contract with Verizon, so just added second handset, a Iphone 5c for $20 a month. I then subscribed to "Pennytalk" 1 cent per minute to the UK and the credit i put on to Pennytalk does not expire, just top up as needed.
The numbers i call in UK are then registered on Pennytalk as "savorities, giving another 20% saving. Works well for me.

Has anyone seen Virgin Mobile's new unlimited plans? They use Sprint network. I used to have their $35 month plan - 300 minutes, unlimited text.. BUT to my chagrin and lack of educating myself find that they did not have plans that included international calling.. Now they do. I am looking at $45 a month unlimited talk, text and includes 100 minutes of intl calls. I just want this option as since I moved into rental house 6 months ago Skype has been crappy. Reset and done self test but only ever hear every 3rd word person says.. Ting is an option as well but Virgin is who I will likely end up with for service. Oh I lost my phone this week so thus the re-education..

100 mins of international calls is not much for a month!! I call my mother weekly and chat for an hour then, with "Pennytalk" that costs me 50 cents a call

That's impressive.

I'm struggling to come up with something to say after 2 minutes....and we usually only talk once a month or so

Actually, this goes for pretty much any phone call with anyone.

I misread your email as thought criticism. Bit oversensitive as this week I lost my phone, drivers license, all banking cards, fingerprint clearance card etc. I have done what I need to.. Thank you for info on Pennytalk as never heard of it! Will look into as back up to Skype and/or Virgin Mobile. Thank you..

Cricket offers (unlimited) calls back to UK landlines for $5 extra a month. Want to phone mobiles? That's $15.

Hi

I moved to NJ in February. I bought a non contract phone to begin with. Go to walmart. I think the network is straightalk. For like $100 i had a phone and 30 days worth of calls and texts.

Then after about 3 months i had no problem going to AT&T and getting an iPhone on 2 year contract. No deposit.

That's my advice

Good luck with everything!

Why would you take out an ATT 2 year contract rather than use GoPhone or Cricket Wireless out of interest? To me, as someone who runs the TCO over 24 months, it makes absolutely zero sense to take out an overpriced ATT contract.

You're essentially subsidising everyone else on prepaid. Thanks though

Because I didnt have the money up front to pay for a phone. Yea sure i am paying more over the 2 years, but i get a good deal for the minutes, texts, data etc. I'm not saying it is the right way, or the best way, i am merely just sharing my experience and what worked best for me

It usually takes 30 mins to go over what was said on PREVIOUS call and then repeating everything twice on the latest call.

Me and my wife brought our phones over from the UK as they were unlocked already. We signed up with Tmobile as they do the sim only month to month plans. We got it cheaper as a relative over here was already on TM so we went in the store together and joined his plan which meant the costs are lower. We just hand the relative about $60 per month for the 2 of us. Unlimited calls, texts and 3gb of 4g data.

I just got here (OK) three days ago. I managed to get PAYG with Cricket for both myself and my wife, Unlimited calls and Texts with 1G High Speed Data per month for $ 70 and we were able to use the phones we brought with us from the UK with no unlocking required. So far so good, they seem to work great

Wish I could have sent you a referral code. $25 to you, and $25 to me. Doh!
