Default German universities for international (US) students?

How US students get a university degree for free in Germany - BBC News

This is very interesting I think...

there are loads of courses available across EU which are in English. The german degrees are v well respected and it's good to see how open they are to international students studying there for free. As an EU passport holder you wouldn't even be classed as international (it's still free).

I'm definitely putting this idea out there for my son - who, in any case has studied german for the last 5 years, is bilingual french/english and is studying the IB which would mean no prep year for him.

I think it depends on what he wants to study where. There are only 5, top 100 ranked German universities, versus 10 UK ones. The terrible, expensive, useless Americans have 27 in the first 50.

Steve
I think I'd be questioning the methodology.

That's the Times list
In Engineering, there are 6 German schools in the top 100, and 12 British ones. There are 6 British ones before you even get to a German one.

So, according to OH (BSc in Electronic Engineering, UMIST) who has lived, worked and hired engineers in France, Germany, Uk and now USA....
"German university engineering undergrad education is really, really good. They turn out excellent engineers who can hit the ground running. What they're not so great at is world class research mostly because they don't have the money like the US ones do. And that is what the lists tend to look at."

My spouse did exactly the same degree at UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology). I wonder if they were in the same classes?

Ironically, I found that Germans weren't much good at any kind of engineering where imagination was needed.

That's the typical view here in my large american corporation. If you need top quality with no surprises go German. If you want them to do something differently to the way they have always done it, go anywhere else.
