Car dealers are required by NJ state law to check that you have insurance before they release the car. Showing them an insurance certificate is not enough...they must check with the insurance company. When we moved here 17 years ago we could not get insurance before we obtained a NJ driver's license...of course this could have changed.

Insurance - From Progressive (through a broker). This is the biggie - $1400 for 6 months! Also have renters insurance and umbrella insurance which brought the car insurance quote DOWN
Jesus, that's expensive insurance. Mine's around $900 for a German sedan. My renters insurance is around $170, but that includes itemised jewellery pieces.

Why's it so expensive do you think?

Almost everything is more expensive in NJ...including car insurance and utilities.

This 2013 survey [http://www.insure.com/car-insurance/...ce-rates.html] states MA (where I reside) is the 15th most expensive, and NJ the 12th. So no real difference then.

Check to see if you husband's company is accepted by NJ Manufacturers. They are renowned for being the best in NJ.

T mobile's coverage alleges to be ok where we are going. I hope so...I Want to take my iPhone (unlocked) which I think won't work with at &t. They also wanted a big deposit. We're moving to SF Bay Area so pretty urban.

Just Internet/tv to sort...

UK phones run on GSM, so does AT&T. It will work fine. Which iPhone is it out of interest? If it's a 5, you will only have HSPA+ access, not LTE.

They also wanted a big deposit.
For postpaid, not prepaid. What i quickly realised when I landed here is that unless you're on a family plan on postpaid, you're being _seriously_ ripped off. Only T-Mobile (with their 'uncarrier' plans) will reduce the cost of your line rental once your phone subsidy is paid off. VZW & AT&T have no such equivalent. They will charge you, someone with an non-subsidised phone, the same as one with a subsidised phone.

I was with T-Mobile for a month and a half, then left in despair at their woeful data coverage outside anywhere remotely urban. Go with AT&T GoPhone. They offer $60 for LTE access, unlimited calls/txt & 2GB data.

4S is a good choice. That will support all GSM HSPA+ and both in the UK and USA. I'm waiting for the 5S to come out here with the hope it will support more worldwide LTE networks (I need both US & UK LTE supported ideally).

I wish I knew! My hubby sorted it out, and the first quote we got was for $2k for 6 months. The car is new and we did increase the personal/property liability. We are in NJ - maybe the proximity to NYC is something to do with it? Our renter's insurance is $212 for the year and umbrella is $183 for the year. Our insurance was through a broker too and we bought over evidence of 12+ years no claims and a clean record from the DVLA, which they (said they) took into consideration. I'll have to hold off on the $500 shoes for the moment (just joking ) although I did just spend $130 on a haircut and my hair is short to begin with!
