Default Florida?

Just a quickie!,we live in central Illinois at the moment, but Don is going to be retiring in the next few years and we are seriously considering selling up here and moving to Florida,my question is...any suggestions of the areas to avoid, and why,we've been looking at Realty sites and like the look of the outskirts of Orlando,Pensacola and Panama City,we know they are pretty we spread out,but we were looking at them price-wise,we are not the 'rolling in money types'just ordinary working class.
Thank you all,we went to Orlando last year,on vacation, but didn't have time to really look around the way we wanted to,but we really loved what we did get to see.......Thanks again.....Sophia and Don

What are your preferences? Peace and tranquility? Big city? Beach? Fishing? Entertainment? College town/cosmopolitan? Resort? Retirment community? (sorry, forgot the whole of FL is a retirement community)

Hard to answer without some idea of these.... but if you want peace and tranquility, try the Forgotten Coast (the "dip" in the panhandle). An hour or so from Tallahassee and Destin...rural, quiet...if that's what you like.

The further south you go the warmer it gets...
The further south you go the more expensive it gets..

I consider Orlando to be Hell ..its too noisy, ridiculous amount of cars with drivers who should remember whats side of the road they should be on...and well overpriced, it ain't Florida..I live 100 miles and thats too close..

Default Florida?

Sorry, should have said.....preferably peaceful and tranquil, but not TOO far from the beach.......we realise that Orlando would be a pretty hectic place, okay for a vacation, but not to live,we have been having a look in the Tallahassee area as well, and it looks nice as well, how about flooding and,of course, the dreaded hurricanes?
Don came down to the Panama City area a couple of years ago with his National Guard Unit, and really liked the small amount of area that he managed to see,he's coming down there again later this year,as well,so he's going to see if he can get the chance to see a bit more.......we really just want to get right away from these cold winters and being SO far away from everything, neither of us like big cities(can't stand Chicago!!!),our son only has one more year at school, and then college, thats one of the main reasons we've stayed in this area for so long, just to save him having to change schools, but then, there'll be nothing keeping us here!!!THANK GOODNESS!
Thanks for your help.....Sophia and Don

Take a look at Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples, Venice. Quiet and civilised but expanding rapidly. Lots of homes available. Large but discrete Brit population. Cape Coral is the home of Cameron's British Foods.

Fort Myers airport is being expanded right now and hopefully we will get direct UK flights.

I'll chip in aswell then. I'm in North East Florida in St Augustine, just south of Jacksonville. It's a small quiet place with loads of character and history. The historical area can be expensive for housing, but surrounding areas are reasonable. If your husband likes Golf, we have the World Golf Village and Hall of Fame here.

The south west coast is amazing. We own land in Fort Myers and the last time we went down there we went to a place called Bonita Springs to play golf. They have a 5 mile stretch of white sandy beach there which is out of this world. We went there every day for a week and barely saw anyone. There were turtle nests on the beach etc. which I thought was pretty cool. It is quiet and nothing like the east coast where we found to get on a decent patch of beach you had to be booked into a hotel. If it is the quiet life you are looking for you would have to go a long way to beat the south west coast.
