Re: Flights to US
i normally check netflights.com worldwideflights.com and cheapflights.com.....also if you can change your dates around or maybe travel to different airports then you can sometimes save a bit of money.

hmmm, August is mega spensive, but i've flown to Dulles an awful lot in recent years, and i've usually found either US Airlines or Delta to be cheapest when i've looked. seems like the airlines themselves give the best prices too.

I'm looking for flights back to the UK at the moment and am finding bing.com's travel section really good for flight searches and price predictions. Check it out.

August is a hell month to fly. All the kids coming back from Summer in Europe. Expect to pay out the nose.
However, you do have some options. Have you considered BWI airport? It's not all that far from Dulles and sometimes cheaper. You could go to BWI, rent a car and then drive to Dulles.
The other option is get a flight to JFK (usually UK-JFK is amongst the cheaper out there) and then catch a puddle jumper to IAD Dulles. United has several JFK-IAD flights.

Re: Flights to US
As everybody else already said, August is mega-expensive already, plus flights this year are noticeably more expensive than last year.
I'd also suggest to have a look at kayak.co.uk for flight prices.

Only about a quarter of the Amtraks stop at Newark airport station - if you arrive in one of the 2-3 hour gaps between trains you might want to get a northbound local to Newark Penn (<10 mins) and change there for Amtrak southbound.

Re: Flights to US
Flights to the U.S from England/Europe I tend to go to the carriers direct and compare the prices as said July through to parts of Sept are stupid prices for obvious reasons.
I have had flights go through frankfurt and amsterdam to get a good deal so look at these.
I found orbitz the best price to get my fiance here during the school hols, wasnt cheap, but was the best.
The best price I have had up to press was in february...ok not when you want to go, but very much off peak was around £450 via philly U.S Airways then the last flight was £479 via amsterdam then via JFK on the return leg.
all the sites mentioned are good, but only some are good nearer the time you want to go...well worth shopping around....
Make sure you read the small print with agents etc...some make silly charges for stuff.
good luck

Skyscanner.com has a facility to check the whole of a month or year. If your dates are really flexible this is a great tool. They search the best deals accross a selection of travel agents and re-direct you to their site to book.
