Don't need to drive 8 hours - 'The Chip Shop' in Brooklyn and 'A Salt & Battery' in Greenwich Village both do "the real deal". The former's a sit-down relatively low-key British-themed pub/restaurant with fish, proper British Chips, Irn Bru, Vimto, deep-fried mars bars, treacle sponge - the lot. The latter's a take-away only place but has a bench outside you can sit on and people-watch.
These days I have a total aversion to cities. However will keep your recommendations in case I ever get dragged down there again by another relative from Blighty. |
Re: Fish and Chips
I had pretty good fish and chips at Red Robin, in fact the fish was really good.

Re: Fish and Chips
I haven't tried any of them but there are fish-and-chip shops (plural) in Kearny NJ - town had/has a large influx from Scotland so I'm told (home of many of the early-90s us soccer team).

Re: Fish and Chips
I love F+C and I became that desperate for them I bought myself a deep fat fryer..and OMG it was the best decision I ever made, now I can have homemade F+C anytime my little heart desires and I've found the perfect receipe for the batter on the fish, its the most simple but also the most delicious in fact I think I'll make it tonight for tea with some curry sauce.
I think the best chinese style curry sauce its called Golden Curry Sauce mix and you can get them in different temperatures, yes you heard right you can get mild, medium, medium/hot and hot (I think medium/hot tastes the best) and you can get this sauce at any supermarket in the international food section and they also sell it at World Market. |

I think you'll find that Golden Curry Sauce in Chinese grocery stores. Also, I think the brand is Japanese and if you find the Golden brand, you'll probably find other similar brands of curry sauce in slab form. |
