OK. Here's my experience. 25 years IT and a degree from Oxford - I spent my first 2 years here selling cars in southern California. No U.S. company was interested in anyone without U.s. experience. Back home I could quit a job in the morning and have a new one by lunch time.
If you can, find a U.K. employer with a U.S. presence (or vice versa), get the job in the U.K. and get a transfer. That's the way I tried to do it but the company I worked for closed down the data center in Santa clara 3 weeks before our move. Bastards.

That sucks. Hope things pick up soon. It looks like we're moving down to Phoenix. I just picked up 2 contracts there and another is in the works. Was down there for 3 weeks at the end of April / start of May. Went from 40F here in OR to 100F+ in Phoenix.

Where abouts in Phoenix are you planning to live? We have just moved into an apartment in Chandler (last week). Now we are serious pounding the pavement looking for jobs!
