I know when my husband came down from Canada, he worked in a school district for peanuts and in order to draw social security benefits, he had to have contributed to the social security system for ten years. Therefore he worked until he was 70 before retiring. His NYS pension is pin money only. However, because he married me and I had over 45 years of social security earnings banked with SS when I retired and started drawing my benefits, he was entitled to an increase in his benefits based on my benefits. It did not lower my money benefit but it did increase his.
