#500 GBP for the tutition fees
~#80 GBP for visa paperwork fees
~#100 GBP for various misc fees from registering at CU... I think to partly-fund things like voluntary organisations/obscure clubs.
+ flights (though these can be paid for by the UK gov't if your parents earn below a threshold, one of the guys on my course did this)
+ living expenses ( accomodation, food, books)
I did however have to prove funding for the latter. Basically statements of my savings, proof of my income (from summer/parttime work), and my parents income satisfied this.
I was there for 10 months, accomodation was $400 a month (shared apartment off campus). Food and books weren't that expensive TBH (well, one textbook cost $100 IIRC! )... I think at the time it was said you should have around $10,000USD to survive the year.

The $10K figure ir more to secure the visa, if you can't show you have that for a six month semester, you might not get the visa, and then you ain't going...and $100 on a book, that's nothing mate.
