A perfectly respectable position, is seventh

I just grasped the significance. Wimbledon were a power-house back in '88, they beat a team only a hair breadth better.

Yeah. It wasn't anywhere near the same kind of thing as if they'd been a D2 team (the 1988 D2, as it was).

It shows how hard it is to shake off a reputation. People still thought of the Dons as if they were still in the Isthmian League.

Right, even though they were a top flight side for 20 years (give or take).

Not that I liked that they won the FA Cup in '88, of course ...

Living in London at the time, I was with the Wimbledon fans (in reality i was 50/50 in their end), three league game tokens got you a final ticket.

I wasn't so lucky as to be at the game, I just watched it round at my granny's house. I was also 9 at the time, so a trip to Wembley wasn't exactly on the cards as it was!

Yeah that's easy to say now in hindsight but I remember it well. Liverpool were league champions and heavy odds-on favourites to win that FA Cup final. You could still get long odds on Wimbledon even in the final. Not many people gave them much chance. In terms of FA Cup final shocks in my lifetime, it probably only ranks behind Sunderland in 1973, Southampton in 1976 and West Ham in 1980 (which is one I forgot to mention originally).

Talking of Liverpool. Saw this on the internet:

"Maggie Thatcher dies and now Alex Ferguson retires. Police are searching for a Liverpool fan with a lamp and one wish left"
