extend of visa

Dear all,
Recently i have filed a changing of my visa status from B-2 to F-1 in INS. but my B-2 visa would be expired soon, am i need to extend my B-2 visa in order to wait for the application complete?
If i dont file an extend of my B-2 visa. After my B-2 visa expired, and if i need to go back my home country to apply the F-1 visa, would the overstay affect my application and got penality?
