One surgery of almost any sort, is pretty much guaranteed to blow through any insurance deductible. I had two minor skin excisions under general anesthetic, and three nights in hospital on a drip, so as close to the minimum service for an inpatient procedure as you're likely to find (apart from the drip, I was considered to be "self caring"), and the bill was a squeak over $20k! .... and that was 17 years ago!!!

Pro tip: if ever possible, schedule any routine surgical procedure as early in the year as possible, then all your healthcare for the rest of the year will be "free". Which means if there is anything else (surgery or expensive treatment) that you have been putting off, you have the rest of the year to schedule that and get it fully paid for.

A couple of years ago, Mrs P needed "significant" (though common enough) surgery that was going to easily bust her max OoP for the year. She had that in the spring, then after 10 weeks of recovery she scheduled the rotator cuff repair surgery that she had been putting off for several years, and she got that paid for in full!

Just one more reason why the system is so insane. What would cost you $0 on Dec 31st might cost you $10k on Jan 1st.
Store up all your illnesses and then have a year of healthcare.
